In the early 1990's as a college student at Georgetown University, I was selected in a nationwide audition to be a part of the New York String Orchestra, sponsored by the New School of Music. It was this experience that changed my perspective on my musical life forever. During my participation, I became strongly moved by the lack of diversity in classical music and made it my mission to return to the District of Columbia to start teaching children from the urban community. I became a founding member of the Howard University String Quartet and worked with three other members to recruit students to Howard for the String Program.
Now, 20 years later, a simple idea of sharing music with children has evolved into a foundation whose mission is to make the arts accessible to all communities, especially the undeserved community of Memphis. It is my hope to establish multiple Blue Violin Foundations across the country to leave a legacy of musical gate keys for all children and adults who wish to participate. Our programs operate at a 40%-60% discount of market lesson rates in our respective areas.
Most families from the communities we serve are unable to pay for music lessons and the instrument simultaneously. Our affordable lesson rates allow our families to have the extra resources to cover instrument rental or purchase costs while saving on tuition. Our future endeavors will include tuition scholarships, instrument loans, and more cultural experiences for students. With the continued help of our community partners and YOU, The Blue Violin Foundation will become a premier institution of musical instruction. Donate today!
